He is the subject of rumors and gossips throughout New York, and is already a kind of legendary celebrity before he is ever introduced to the reader. His role in chapter 5 is to introduced that his relationship with Daisy has reawaken. Daisy was bewildered by Gatsby's luxuries and wealth. Gatsby is the one who leads Daisy from purity to corruption.
